On 13 February 2024, French senators Bernard Jomier, Pascale Gruny, and Cathy Apourceau-Poly met with ESMO’s Director of Public Policy, Jean-Yves Blay, in Brussels to discuss the European Beating Cancer Plan (BCP) and explore how legislative action can support a stronger and more effective implementation of its key priorities. As the leading professional organisation for medical oncology in Europe, ESMO plays a pivotal role in shaping cancer policies, providing expert guidance, and advocating for evidence-based solutions to strengthen prevention, research, and access to care.
During the meeting, ESMO shared its assessment of the progress made in implementing the BCP, highlighting both achievements and areas where further efforts are needed. The discussion focused on where support from the French Senate could help enhance its impact, particularly in areas such as cancer prevention (air pollution, tobacco control, asbestos exposure), rare cancers, oncology workforce shortages, and securing long-term research funding under FP10. ESMO also underscored its ongoing engagement with EU institutions to ensure these priorities remain central to European health policy.
This exchange reinforced the importance of collaboration between the oncology community and policymakers in shaping effective cancer strategies. ESMO will continue working with national and EU decision-makers to ensure that cancer care remains a top priority, that research funding is secured, and that patients with cancer across Europe benefit from the most effective prevention and treatment strategies.
