ESMO Engages with the Newly Established Committee on Public Health (SANT) in the European Parliament

Strengthening Collaboration to Advance Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan
27 Jan 2025

The European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) congratulates the newly appointed members of the European Parliament’s Committee on Public Health (SANT) – now an independent, full-standing committee. With a strengthened mandate, SANT plays a crucial role in shaping EU health policy, overseeing public health programmes, regulating pharmaceuticals and addressing major health challenges, including cancer. As a key stakeholder in oncology policy and research, ESMO welcomes the establishment of this committee and looks forward to working closely with its members to advance Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan (EBCP) and improve cancer care across the EU.

ESMO wrote to each member of SANT to emphasise the importance of tackling the entire cancer pathway - from prevention and early detection to treatment and survivorship - while ensuring patient access to innovation and strengthening Europe’s research ecosystem.

With cancer cases in Europe projected to rise from 4.4 million in 2022 to 5.48 million by 2045, the role of policymakers in addressing this growing burden is more critical than ever.

ESMO’s policy manifesto, For a Healthier Europe: An Evidence-Based Approach to Optimising Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan, outlines five key areas of intervention necessary to achieve these goals.

We look forward to engaging with the committee and contributing our scientific expertise to support evidence-based decision-making in cancer care.
