LUGANO-MADRID –The debate on duration of adjuvant chemotherapy for colon cancer is featured in a Special Session at the ESMO 2017 Congress in Madrid. (1)

Monday, 11 September, 14:45 to 16:15, Madrid Auditorium, IFEMA

Leaders in the field of gastrointestinal cancer will discuss the controversial issue of whether three months of chemotherapy is sufficient for the adjuvant treatment of colon cancer. Is the answer the same for all patients and all treatments? What should clinicians do?

The debate stems from questions about neurotoxicity with six months of oxaliplatin-based chemotherapy, which has been the standard adjuvant therapy for stage III colon cancer since 2004. Research has probed into whether three months of treatment can provide the same benefit with fewer side effects.

The session is co-chaired by Andrés Cervantes, Chair of the ESMO Educational Committee, Medical Oncology Department, INCLIVA University of Valencia, Valencia, Spain, and Alberto Sobrero, ESMO 2017 congress co-chair, Medical Oncology Unit, IRCCS San Martino, Genova, Italy.

Results from the SCOT, TOSCA, ACHIEVE and IDEA-FRANCE trials will be presented, followed by expert interpretation by a clinician and a statistician. The implications for ESMO Clinical Practice Guidelines will be discussed, and members of the panel will be asked to vote for three or six months of treatment in a variety of clinical scenarios.

This promises to be a lively session which will showcase the latest research, delve into the arguments, and provide clear advice for clinicians.
