It is with great sadness that ESMO has learnt of the passing of Maurice Schneider, one of the Society’s co-founders.
Dr Schneider dedicated his life to advancing the field of oncology. His efforts were instrumental in securing the recognition of the oncology degree in France, paving the way for future generations of medical oncology professionals across Europe.
Dr. Schneider's legacy is defined by his unwavering commitment to the field of oncology, including the establishment of the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) in 1975, which proved essential to promote the recognition of medical oncology as a specialty throughout Europe and, consequently, to advance and standardise the education and training of oncologists.
As president of La Ligue contre le cancer – Comité des Alpes-Maritimes for 19 years, he created a supportive ecosystem for patients, ensuring that no one faced cancer alone, demonstrating his compassionate approach to medicine.
He fostered international cooperation among oncologists, organising annual conferences that brought together experts from various countries to share knowledge and advance cancer research.
His work has left an indelible mark on the medical community and continues to inspire those who follow in his footsteps.
Dr. Schneider's passing is a significant loss to the field of oncology. The ESMO Executive Board expresses its deepest condolences on behalf of the entire Society, which owes its very existence to him and Dr George Mathé.
He is survived by his family, friends, and colleagues, who will cherish his memory and honour his contributions to medicine.
