ESMO President will act as an Advisor
ESMO has been confirmed as a partner of the recently launched Lancet Commission on Women and Cancer, where ESMO President, Dr. Solange Peters will act as an Advisor.
ESMO’s invaluable role in global cancer control and leadership in advancing gender equity in cancer research, practice, and policy have earned the Society this recognition as those values are well aligned with those of the Commission.
ESMO’s collaboration with the Commission will include, among others, initiatives such as joint dissemination events, prior to and/or following the publication of the Commission’s main report, which is scheduled to be published in The Lancet on International Women's Day, 8 March 2023. Furthermore, both organisations will leverage their respective collective work to develop opportunities for early-career women in cancer research. Updates will be published regularly as the work of the Commission progresses.
The Commission envisions a world where every person, regardless of gender, geography, socioeconomic status, or identity, can realise their right to accessible, affordable, quality cancer prevention and care. It will address urgent and timely questions at the intersection of social inequality, cancer risk and outcomes, and the status of women in society. It will not be narrowly focused on women's cancers, nor solely on the gendered impacts of cancers that affect both women and men. Rather, the Commission will explore the nexus of gender, power, and cancer.
