In the past 13 years, I have been deeply involved with clinical research in breast cancer and my passion has not changed” says Evandro. “However, I am (and assume all my colleagues are) experiencing a change in the oncology field. We are pressured by the institute to be full-time clinicians, while at the same time feel pressure from the university to be competitive in research. No one can deny the global cancer burden and hence, increase in number of cancer cases. Yet as challenging as it all is, we do it to increase the number of cancer survivors—and we are making progress in that direction. If I had to start my specialisation today with all the “challenges” I’ve encountered in the past 13 years, would I choose medical oncology again? My answer is definitely YES! Am I a happy oncologist? YES I am, and suppose I’ll be happy as long as the balance between my professional and personal life prevails!
