Luc Antigny, the winner of the 2024 ‘Best Student’ Award in Naples, talk about his experience at the ESMO Course in Medical Oncology for Medical Students.
What was your main reason for applying to join the course?
I applied to the course to engage with international medical oncologists and students, aiming to broaden my perspective on medical oncology.
What was your take home message from the five days?
Medical oncology is a rapidly evolving field, where, as a graduate student, it's difficult to predict exactly how you will practice medicine because there are many ways to be a medical oncologist. Oncology offers exciting possibilities to dedicated professionals focused on patient care. Four days is a short time, but just enough to give you a glimpse into the opportunities, leaving you to discover many more throughout your journey, if you pursue this career.
Why are you interested in medical oncology?
I initially developed an interest in molecular oncology and immunology through a French MD-PhD programme. Later, at the hospital, where I practised, I gained firsthand experience, meeting with patients to discuss the nature of cancer, its impact on their lives, and possible treatment options. This experience in the oncology ward motivated me more to become a medical oncologist, to support patients during such critical times. Despite advancements in treatment, cancer remains a life-threatening disease, and contributing to innovation in oncology is what drives my commitment to this field.
How do you feel about having a professional society, such as ESMO, supporting you in your professional development?
In my opinion, ESMO will play a significant role in my career as a medical oncologist. I had the chance to attend ESMO Barcelona 2024, which highlighted the crucial role that such large congresses play in advancing oncology innovation and enhancing patient care worldwide. On a more personal level, ESMO offers invaluable opportunities to connect with individuals who can support my development, both in clinical and in the research field.
Would you recommend this course and why?
I highly recommend this course to any medical student interested in medical oncology. It serves as an excellent introduction to the oncology field. Moreover, the course provides invaluable experiences with international peers. Undoubtedly, the participation to the course will help address the question, "Am I willing to pursue a career as a medical oncologist?"
