ESMO Patient Advocates Working Group: Call for Applications

Call for Applications

The European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO), representing more than 35,000 oncology professionals in 172 countries and recognized as a global reference for oncology education and information, is in the process of globalising its Patient Advocates Working Group (PAWG).

Comprised of 12 representatives – 6 from Europe, 3 from Asia/Pacific and 1 each from North America, Latin America and Africa – from patient advocate groups, the newly globalized ESMO PAWG will work with the ESMO Director of Public Policy, from 2025, to identify the challenges and opportunities facing patients with cancer and develop a global patient strategy to contribute tangibly to the delivery of sustainable cancer care worldwide.

Members of the PAWG will operate on a voluntary basis. With the support of the ESMO Public Policy team, as well as appropriate travel and accommodation expenses, they will be required to:

  • Represent the views of their parent organisation on the ESMO PAWG for an initial 2-year term.
  • Attend quarterly meetings – 3 virtual and 1 in person at the ESMO Congress.
  • Assist ESMO staff with the review, analysis and drafting of policy papers.
  • Develop the program for the Patient Advocacy tracks at ESMO’s European and Asian congresses.
  • Share their expertise in the development of ESMO’s Clinical Practice Guidelines and other resources.
  • Upon request, represent ESMO at both internal and external events.
  • Undertake additional tasks flowing from the development of the Global Patient Strategy.

PAWG members are required to fulfil the following pre-requisites:

  • Have Board level, or equivalent, experience in a recognised cancer patient advocacy group.
  • Be an ESMO member or be willing to join the society for the duration of their membership in the ESMO PAWG.
  • Complete the ESMO Declaration of Interest statement within the ESMO DOI Platform and keep this updated.
  • Commit to abide by the terms of the Society’s Code of Conduct.
  • Have a minimum level of C1 proficiency in English.

Please contact the ESMO Patient Advocacy Lead, Tanya Kenny, if you require further information about the role and/or the work of the PAWG.

Interested parties should send, in English, their CV (1-page A4) and a cover letter (500 words maximum) outlining their candidate’s experience and motivation, to patientadvocacy@esmo.org by 18:00 CET on 27th September.

All applicants will be informed of the decision by 13th December with the successful candidates expected to begin their role from 1st January 2025.
