History
The VU University Medical Center (VUmc) is one of the largest care and research institutions in the Netherlands with over 750 beds and 5.600 employees, and is located in the Amsterdam metropolitan area. VUmc was opened in 1964 as the Academic Hospital of the Vrije Universiteit. The Department of Medical Oncology was founded in 1979 by Prof. Dr H.M. Pinedo.

The Department of Medical Oncology of the VUmc is a dynamic organisation with an outstanding international reputation. It has an extensive clinical and preclinical scientific research programme and there is a close bed-to-bench interaction with the Research Laboratory Medical Oncology (LabMO).

Oncogenesis, immunopathogenesis, disease profiling, targeted therapy for development of personalised medicine, research within the field of quality of life, psycho-oncology and palliative care.
Palliative and Supportive Care
Since October 2006, the Department of Medical Oncology has combined its activities and knowledge with respect to palliative care in the Expertise Center Palliative Care. VUmc collaborates with Hospice Kuria in this network of expertise. This network provides regional support in order to optimise palliative care in the Amsterdam area.
