History

The Vall d’Hebron University Hospital was founded in 1952. Today it is one of the largest hospitals in Spain. It is comprised of four large centres; the General Area, the Maternity and Children’s Area, Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation Area and the Out-patient Surgery Unit (Pere Virgili Health Care Park) which cover almost all medical and surgical specialities.

Profile

We have 1400 hospital beds and 6500 qualified employees. As a university hospital there are medical and nursing students. We also host several research centres, laboratories, imaging services and complementary buildings.

Specialities

The Oncology division provides services in Medical Oncology, Radiation Oncology, Clinical Haematology, Genetic Counselling and Palliative Care. We engage in basic and clinical research and serve a population of 1.5 million residents, attending 3400 new patients with any kind of malignancy per year. We participate in multidisciplinary committees linked to Surgical Oncology. Medical Oncology provides service on an in-out patient basis and an infusion unit. Clinical Haematology Service provides both in-patient and out-patient service.

Palliative and Supportive Care

The Palliative Care Supportive Unit was founded in 1994. This unit was created with the goal of providing comprehensive care and alleviating the suffering of patients and their families with a life-threatening cancer disease. Currently we attend patients admitted to the Oncology-Haematology ward, emergency room, out-patient clinic and provide phone support to patients in the community. We also participate in clinical and educational projects as well as organize a 20 hour Palliative Care course to clinicians twice a year.
The team is comprised of an attending physician, three specialized nurses, one half time social worker, a half time psychologist, a half time chaplain and a full time supportive nurse.
