History
The Unit of Medical Oncology is a ward of the Pederzoli Hospital, a 310-bed hospital located in Peschiera del Garda (VR). In 1987 the Pederzoli Hospital was integrated into the public network of patient care services of the Veneto Region. As such, the hospital is included in the Health Maintenance Organisation n. 9 of the Regional Health System of the Veneto Region and through a convention agreement within the Region.
The Health Maintenance Organisation n. 9 oversees the maintenance of health of the residents of the province of Verona (around 925.000 people).
Profile
The Unit of Medical Oncology cares for cancer patients within our in and outpatient settings. The personnel of the Unit includes 5 medical oncologists, 1 haematologist, 8 nurses, 1 clinical research associate and a secretary. The facility includes 15 chemotherapy chairs and beds. Each year at the Unit evaluates around 700 new cases of cancer (solid tumours, lymphomas, myelomas, chronic leukaemia), performed 15.000 specialist examinations and administered 3.500 cycles of chemotherapy.
Specialities
Solid tumours - specialist expertise in breast carcinoma, gastrointestinal cancer (especially pancreatic cancer) and urological tumours.
Palliative and Supportive Care
The Unit of Medical Oncology places great value on the time spent communicating to patients their diagnosis, prognosis and the periodic review of treatment. Patient's autonomy is always granted, including the decision to stop treatment and the respect of advanced directives. The specialists working in the Unit work collaboratively and are dedicated to the needs of all cancer patients in the various stages of the disease. For palliative medicine, the Pederzoli Hospital has two facilities: a "Country Hospital" with 24 beds and a Hospice with 10 beds. The Country Hospital accepts patients who can no longer be treated at home because they are temporarily impaired and need "inpatient" care for a short duration. The Hospice facility cares for terminally ill patients (mostly cancer patients, but not only). These two facilities are very closely located (but physically separated) from the Unit of Medical Oncology.
