History

Oncology department was founded in 1973. Multidisciplinary work was developed after 2000, the department is involved in complex oncology center for Prague and Middle Czech Area. In 2006 The COC was established and re-accredited in 2009 and 2012 by ESMO.

Profile

COC consists of two medical facilities that provide complex oncology care to patients with malignant disorders in close cooperation. Both facilities comprise of outpatient department and inpatient department (total 105 beds). Our staff: 28 doctors, 55 nurses, 2 psychologists, 1 chaplain, 1 geriatrist.

The palliative care is provided in three settings:

  • Outpatient - with the cooperation of all staff including the psychological care and palliative pain car
  • Home-based - services provided in coordination with community palliative care services with close telephone monitoring and by nurse specialist to identify problem
  • In patient - the centre provides supportive care, symptomatic therapy, respite and terminal care
  • Specific oncology therapy is provided individually for patients (surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy as well as biological therapy)

Specialities

Both parts of the centre participate on the provision of successive care for oncology patients and have close interaction with external subjects - Home care agencies, Hospice, Mobil hospice, volunteers.

The Centre has teams of specialists for pain and nutrition support. Specialized outpatient department provides therapy of lymphedema.

Department of rehabilitation with 58 beds is also incorporated within COC.

Palliative and Supportive Care

The supportive and palliative care is provided on both out patient and in patient basis.

Pain control is performed by a team of palliative care specialists. This team consists of second opinion physicians specializing in the diagnostics and treatment of pain and other physical symptoms. Psychologist is a member of therapeutic teams in both centres.

Patient has the option to visit and talk to a priest (hospital chaplain).

Social workers (nurses, community services and departments of social services) closely cooperate with our COC.
