The Division of Medical Oncology is part of DIMI Department of Engineering for Innovation Medicine of the University Hospital of Verona.
Profile
Our department consists of:
- Day Service (DH), providing care to outpatients needing chemotherapy and supportive and Palliative Care (PC).
- The ward for inpatient care includes 6 double rooms (12 patients) for cancer treatments, diagnostic procedures and therapies requiring continuous monitoring, and 2 single rooms for patients requiring isolation for complicated/severe febrile neutropenia or sepsis due to chemotherapy. In addition, 4 single bedrooms are dedicated to PC in order to follow, in a continuous care fashion, patients no longer benefiting of active treatments.

Palliative and Supportive Care
Dr. Serena Zuliani is a full-time dedicated specialist in medical oncologist with a 2-year master degree in Palliative Medicine, as required by the Italian Law N° 38/2010 (a law related to the palliative care) for physicians who lead or work in a PC team or unit. All the other physicians have experience and have been trained in treating patients with a palliative intent.
The medical oncology fellows are trained in PC through plenary sessions, small breakout groups and a 12 months' rotation and practice in caring patients admitted to cancer ward with life-threatening illnesses.
Each nurse working in the Oncology ward is trained in PC (one of them achieved a Master in PC for nurses and healthcare professionals.
