History
The activity of the Medical Oncology Unit initiated in the late '70s as a branch of the 3rd Division of Internal Medicine. In the '90s, the outpatient unit became independent and dedicated only to patients with solid tumors. In early 2000, 18 beds were assigned to the inpatient unit. Since 2012 the Division has been connected to the Medical School, University of Brescia, and in 2016 the Postgraduate School of Medical Oncology was instituted and started its teaching activities.
Profile
The Medical Oncology Unit is dedicated to the care of patients with solid tumors, from the first diagnosis to palliative care. There are both outpatient and inpatient units. On average, 70-75 patients have access to the outpatient unit every day for antineoplastic therapy administration, patient assessment (first evaluation, follow-up, etc.) or supportive care. Multidisciplinary teams are available for different tumor types. A Clinical Trial Unit assists staff physicians in the conduct of clinical research.
Specialities
Endocrine tumors (especially adrenal tumors, but also neuroendocrine neoplasms and thyroid neoplasms), head and neck cancers, breast cancer, melanoma, genitourinary, and thoracic neoplasms.
Palliative and Supportive Care
We administer supportive therapies to our oncologic patients either in the
outpatient or in the inpatient unit. A direct connection is available between
the inpatient unit and the hospice facility. For outpatients, a nurses' service
is available at our hospital for assessing with the patient and his/her family
the appropriate program of home care versus hospice care.
