History

National Center for Cancer Care and Research (NCCCR) was found during the year 2004. NCCCR is a part of Hamad medical corporation (HMC) which is the government health care provider for the country. NCCCR Formerly known as Al Amal hospital is a 81-bed facility which offers advanced modern therapeutic treatments for cancer patients. The NCCCR is a specialty hospital that is committed to the delivery of optimal treatment and care for patients with cancer and blood disorders. The centre provides these services with compassion, excellence and state-of-the-art-technology through our multidisciplinary healthcare team, education, research, and quality improvement.

Profile

The Department of palliative care was found during the year 2008 with the ambition to provide compassionate and supportive care to our patients and their families, to improve quality of life through an integrated supportive and palliative care program in a holistic approach, that is accessible to the community of Qatar and to become an internationally recognized supportive & palliative care program and a leading centre in the palliative care clinical service across the GCC. The services of palliative care is under the department of oncology and is being chaired and lead by Dr. Salha Bujassoum (Chairman Medical oncology and Palliative Medicine). The services are headed by Dr. Azza Adel Hassan (Senior Consultant), Chief of Palliative care and has the following team of physicians.

Specialities

The palliative care program provides a safe, effective, efficient, holistic and individualized management of patient, along with Optimizing symptom control, improve functional status when appropriate, Promote the highest quality of life for patient and family ,Educate patients and family to promote understanding of the underlying disease process and expected future course of the illness, Establish an environment that is comforting and healing. The palliative care services are provided by the following team along with the physicians, clinical nurse specialist, clinical pharmacist , clinical dietician, social worker, clinical, psychologist, Physical therapy, Occupational therapy and spiritual support.

Palliative and Supportive Care

The first Supportive and Palliative Care Unit (SPCU) in the country was only a 10-bed unit that was established in 2008 to serve adult patients with cancer. The palliative care unit now has been expanded to more than 10 beds. The Supportive and Palliative Care unit (SPCU) within our centre is managed by specialized palliative care team consisting of physicians, CNS, nurses and multidisciplinary teams. The palliative care in our centre provides integrated treatment service along with oncology and haematology sections which include but not limited to pain management, symptom control, and supportive care and comfort measures through a very holistic approach. The palliative care in our centre is committed to provide high quality, evidence-based care and support to all patients and their families throughout their cancer journey. We work in close partnership with Oncology and Haematology in our facility providing palliative care through outpatient clinics, Inpatient services and consultations, weekly MDT palliative care meeting and patients family meetings.
