History
Malabar Cancer Centre [Postgraduate Institute of Oncology Science & Research], Thalassery is an autonomous institution under the Health and Family Welfare Department, Government of Kerala. The institute is located in Kodiyeri, Thalassery of Kannur District, and was established in 2001 with clinical services started in the same year. Currently, Malabar Cancer Centre (MCC) has over 200 beds and the Institute caters to patients from Kerala and the neighboring states of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Mahe.
Profile
MCC provides a full spectrum of oncological care as an autonomous not-for-profit institution funded by the State Government and other sources. Patients are financially categorised according to their economic status, and accordingly, 85-93% of patients are provided with either free or significantly subsidised treatment through various government support schemes and the financial assistance system of the institution. The MCC provides a wide range of services encompassing the entire spectrum of cancer care. These services are delivered by a multidisciplinary team comprising of medical oncologists, surgical oncologists, radiation oncologists, nurses, radiologists, pathologists and other allied healthcare professionals. In addition to its clinical and research activities, the institution is actively engaged in community outreach programmes to raise awareness about cancer prevention, early detection and treatment options.

Palliative and Supportive Care
The Department of Cancer and Palliative Medicine functions within the institute to improve the quality of life of patients who are undergoing oncological treatment and helps with symptom management and pain control. The department consists of;
An officer in charge of the department who manages:
- Treatment plans for all patients.
- OPD and IPD patients services for symptom control.
- Conducting e-palliative homecare services.
- Conducting training courses and sensitisation classes for Doctors, Nurses and Auxillary Nurses.
- Participate in multidisciplinary board meetings.
Other Auxillary staff in the department include;
- A Staff nurse who runs the Stoma clinic, the Lymphedema clinic and assists the officer in charge in delivering other related services.
A Medical Social worker who is involved in:
- Assessing the social, psychological and financial conditions of patients.
- Providing OP and IP counselling for patients and their family
- Psycho-education
