History
Hotel-Dieu de France University Hospital is one of the biggest and oldest multidisciplinary medical centres in Lebanon. It is affiliated to Saint Joseph University, the French University of Beirut and includes 600 beds.
Profile
The department of haematology-oncology includes: 60 in-hospital beds located over 2 floors, and 30 beds in the out-patient hospital. There are 8 attending haematology-oncology specialists and 9 haematology-oncology fellows.
Specialities
The 8 attending specialists in haematology-oncology admit their patients to the different sections of the department and are directly involved in patient care. They provide continuity of care by dividing 24 hours duty between themselves. The department is an integral part of the hospital, providing patients with access to every specialist, should their medical opinion be needed.
Palliative and Supportive Care
The palliative care team consists of 2 full-time specialised physicians, 1 speciality nurse, a priest, 2 psychology specialists, and 2 pain management specialists. The team is introduced to the patient as an integral part of the medical staff. They follow the patient in parallel with the oncologist, as a mobile team, through different stages of the disease, providing supportive care and symptomatic relief whenever needed. A geographic palliative care unit including 7 rooms with 7 beds are offered to cancer patients who are at advanced stages with complex needs.
