History
Founded in February 1990, the MacKay Hospice and Palliative Care Center, was the first in Taiwan to provide palliative care for terminally ill cancer patients including admission, consultation, and home care.
Profile
There are two wards in the centre, one is a hospice ward (30 beds) and the other is oncology ward/intensive palliative unit (25 beds). Centre staff includes several certificated multi-specialised physicians along with a psychiatrist, family physicians, oncologists, psychologists, social workers, nurses and a pastor. The team provides medical services collaboratively including: palliative care, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, psycological and general medical care.
Palliative and Supportive Care
The specialism of the centre is that of an intensive palliative unit which combines general oncology with palliative hospice care. Physicians from the centre and physicians from other specialised departments give treatment in the centre including chemotherapy, radiotherapy, surgery and general palliative care.
Psychosocial and spiritual support is offered to patients and their families and is provided by the centre's social workers and pastor.
