History

In 1992 the Groene Hart Ziekenhuis was founded as a result of a merger of the Bleulandhospital and the Sint-Jozefhospital. It is a medium-sized teaching hospital with 350 beds and 317.000 outpatient visits per year.

Profile

The Department of Medical Oncology and Haematology consists of an oncology ward of 12 beds and 2 palliative care beds. In addition, within the outpatient oncology centre there are 6 beds and 10 chairs available for day treatment. Multi/interdisciplinary teams/tumour boards coordinate and control the diagnostics and treatment for our patients.

Department staff includes 3 medical oncologists, 2 haematologists and 1 physician assistant. 14 dedicated oncology/haematology nurses work as case managers at the outpatient clinic. There are 2 nurse-palliative care consultants and a specialised research employee for oncology and haematology.

Specialities

In our hospital almost all tumor types are treated, with a special focus on breast cancer, urogenital cancer and gastrointestinal cancer.

Palliative and Supportive Care

Groene-Hart-Ziekenhuis-Netherlands-Staff

The hospital has a consultative supportive and palliative care team. This team consists of physicians, medical oncologist, anesthesiologist, respiratory physician, geriatrician, general practionioner, pharmacist, 2 nurse-palliative care consultants, a social worker, a psychologist, a nurse from the transfer service, a dietician and a religious worker. If needed other consultants are available (cardiologist/radiation oncologist).

Our team can be consulted for all in and outpatients in need of palliative care. We are also available for family members of patients. We help determine a care plan that meets the patients' needs, including management of pain and other symptoms, counselling, spiritual support, other therapies and the needs to be met for discharged. The nurse-palliative care consultant ensures that care is handed over smoothly and adequately to the general practitioner and home care team. All patients are discussed in the weekly multidisciplinary palliative care meeting and the issues addressed are noted in the patient's electronic file.

The supportive and palliative care team strives to:

  • Increase awareness and knowledge of palliative care by giving educational sessions
  • Implement palliative care guidelines in Groene Hart Ziekenhuis
  • Participate in research projects
