History
In 1854 our hospital was founded as the first Protestant hospital in Essen, named Evangelische Huyssens-Stiftung. Today, the Evangelische Kliniken Essen-Mitte consist of three Protestant hospitals located in different districts of Essen (Evang. Krankenhaus Essen-Huttrop, Evang. Krankenhaus Essen-Steele, Evang. Krankenhaus Essen-Werden). They represent a modern teaching hospital of the University of Duisburg-Essen bound to Christian principles. The three hospitals provide 925 beds and four day-clinics in 22 faculties.
Profile
The Evang. Kliniken Essen-Mitte are dedicated to the treatment of patients with malignant diseases. In 2019, more than 20.000 cancer patients were treated both as outpatients an inpatients
The center offers integrated oncology and palliative care as well as several national and international cancer centers: (colorectal cancer, gastric cancer, prostate cancer, breast cancer, gynecologic cancers, head & neck cancer, hematologic malignancies including stem cell transplantation).
Specialities
The Department of Medical Oncology focuses on gastrointestinal cancer, lung cancer, urological cancer, geriatric oncology, and palliative medicine. The Department of Hematology and Stem Cell Transplantation deals with malignant lymphomas, multiple myeloma, and acute leukemias. There is a close collaboration between the departments being part of the ESMO designated center and the other facilities at the Evang. Kliniken Essen-Mitte, particularly the departments of visceral and minimally invasive surgery, gastroenterology, interventional radiology, integrative medicine, thoracic surgery, pulmonology, urology, and geriatrics.
Palliative and Supportive Care
In our center, patients with malignant diseases requiring special palliative care are treated either in the Department of Medical Oncology (45 beds, day clinic and outpatient clinic), the Department of Hematology and Stem Cell Transplantation (32 beds, outpatient clinic) or the Department of Palliative Medicine (11 beds, day clinic for outpatients).
Patients with non-malignant diseases and severe symptoms are treated at the department of PM.
Additionally, the PM department’s therapeutic team offers a fully covered specialized palliative service for patients living at home (day clinic and specialized outpatient palliative care).
The palliative medicine team is also responsible for a special consultation service for cancer patients in the other departments of our hospital.
Volunteer groups complete the palliative service of our center. To ensure high quality and accredited training, the Academy for Palliative Care and Hospice Work is located in the PM department and offers a wide range of teaching activities, working groups and discussion panels.
