History
At the beginning the field of activity was purely cancer therapeutic, but through the years the Department has improved the interdisciplinary cooperation with Supportive and Palliative Care Unit. In the Oncology Department,there is since 2014 a room dedicated for the visit with the specialists of the Supportive and Palliative Care who work closely and share in- and out-patients of the Department of Medical Oncology. The center's mission is to improve the understanding of factors affecting the quality of life and quality of care of advanced cancer patients and their caregivers. Specialists interact each other by weekly meetings, in which clinical cases are discussed and shared.
The patients are cured at the same time by all the specialists.
Profile
The Department of Medical Oncology was opened in 2004 and is organized into many Units such as the medical oncoly ward ,the day hospital service and ambulatory service for outpatients.
The Department is structured on 2 floors.
On the ground floor there is the Day Hospital where there are 17 chemotherapy armchairs and three beds.Three oncologists and ten staff nurses operate in this Unit.
On the same floor, there is the Oncology ambulatory in which first oncological visit and follow up visit are performed. On the same floor there is a Pain Management Outpatient Unit, held by two palliative care specialists who visit there twice a week, and the Psycho-Oncology room, where one psychologist , according to a previous booking, receive cancer patients, in all the phases of the disease, and their relatives.
In the day hospital there a room occupied by an ONLUS, the “ Tullio Cairoli Association ” that is committed to humanize the Oncological Department; On the first floor there is the Oncology ward composed by rooms with two or one single beds for a total of 15 beds. One doctor, one “case manager” nurse, 11 staff nurses and 1 healthcare worker work in this theme.
Specialities
The principal tumors treated are: breast, colon, stomach, lung, pancreas, kidney, brain, head and neck, prostate and bladder cancers; Non leukemia-hematological malignancies ( mainly multiple myeloma and Lymphoma ) are also treated.
Palliative and Supportive Care
Oncology and palliative care services visit, take care and share therapeutic and diagnostic decisions of patients with advanced disease still on active therapy and patients with severe symptoms in a “simultaneous care “ model with a systematic early palliative care approach
Terminally ill patients receive palliative care at home by palliative care service or are admitted in the hospice.
