History
The center was built in the early seventies and was originally focussed on hematologic diseases and thoracic oncology. During the eighties it enlarged the Spectrum of adult cancer pathologies which are treated into the center. The organisation of palliative cares was structured in the early eighties.
Profile
The department of Medical Oncology is located in the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire (CHU) of UCL Namur (site Godinne). In this academic entity, the department is constituted by two different entities: one inpatient setting of 16 beds and one outpatient unit of 20 beds. 338 patients are hospitalized per year and more than 3000 ambulatory treatments are administered each year. The medical team consists of 5 senior medical oncologists, 1 consulting medical oncologists, 2 consulting radiation oncologists and 3 trainees in oncology.
Specialities
The center is an academic entity taking care of adult patients with all kinds of cancer pathology.A special emphasize is put on clinical research and formation of medical students and Young trainees.
The center has a special focus on personal respect of patients.
Palliative and Supportive Care
An internal mobile unit of palliative care is available all over time. Every week a common staff meeting is organized together with the palliative unit to discuss about all hospitalized patients. For ambulatory patients contact is
taken with the palliative care unit whenever necessary. For each new request to the palliative unit, there is a common visit to the patient followed by a debriefing between physicians, nurses, social workers, psychologists in order to provide the best care for oncologic patients (drug modifications, external support, ...).
