History

Burjeel Cancer Institute is part of the VPS Healthcare Group which has 24 hospitals and over 125 medical centres spread across the Middle East and India. It is part of Burjeel Medical City (BMC), the largest facility under VPS Healthcare flagship, located in Mohammed Bin Zayed City, Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates (UAE). Our group has over 8 years of experience working with cancer patients.

We stand alone in our unique ability to provide comprehensive, leading-edge cancer care and palliative care and conduct research for the early diagnosis and treatment of cancer and end-of-life care.

The vision of our Chairman, Dr Shamsheer Vayalil, for Burjeel Medical City is to be the preferred and trusted hospital for oncology and wellness through the science of healing and personalised care.

Profile

We are committed to research, to build networks across various hospitals in the UAE and middle east with a strong outreach, and education by deeply engaging in exceptional training programmes for future cancer researchers and clinicians.

Within the 316 inpatient beds, oncology occupies four 13 bedded in-patient units, one of which is for the bone marrow transplantation unit.

We are
  • The only hospital currently who has a Novalis accredited SRS technology for the linear accelerator in the UAE.
  • Providing comprehensive cancer services under one roof.
  • The first centre in UAE who has initiated a specialty in palliative care services and our regulatory authority the Department of Health has initiated the license for that discipline.
  • One of the first centers to provide bone marrow transplant services in the UAE

Our operating theatre suites are contained in 3000 sq m with integrated MRI brain suite of 120 sq m specifically for brain cancer surgeries. We also have a helipad which aids in easy transfer of emergency patients.

At BMC, American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) triple board certified (internal medicine, haematology, and medical oncology) oncologists, work alongside our Palliative care Consultant.

The team

Our team is inclusive of oncology nurses, radiation oncologists, surgical, medical, gynaecology, palliative care, research associates, and guest ambassadors for patient navigation.
Our Registered Nurses (RN) have extensive training for oncology and palliative care.

Oncology pharmacists are specially trained and prepared to provide chemotherapy and supportive care for side-effect management.

Medical oncology offers clinic and walk-in six days a week and daily individualised chemotherapy, targeted therapy and immunotherapy regimens are administered six days a week in our ten chair and three private bedroom day care centre.

Palliative care patients after stabilisation in the inpatient setting can receive home care or transferred to our in-house long-term care setting.
24/7 on-call oncologist, palliative care physician and nurse are available in Burjeel Cancer Institute.

The multidisciplinary cancer programmes work closely with palliative care to manage complex pain, physical symptoms, psychological and social distress.

Palliative and Supportive Care

Burjeel-Cancer-Institute-Abu-Dhabi-Staff

Palliative and supportive care is well integrated at BMC enabling us to respond to the needs of patients with a diagnosis of cancer at any stage in their treatment journey.

We provide support wherever it is needed, from the front door of the hospital - the Emergency Room, to out-patient clinics, in-patient wards, long-term care unit and providing out of hours support.

We have access to the full range of commonly used medications for symptom control and work closely with colleagues in interventional medicine to provide nerve blocks, spinal, epidural or intrathecal analgesia.

We support patients making the transition from acute hospital setting to community care and work closely with both our in-house home care team and external providers.

We accept referrals from across the UAE and internationally and have helped provide end of life care for UAE nationals returning from treatment abroad.
