Training Experience Required
- Proficient in written and spoken English (IELTS exam required for applicants from non-English speaking countries)
- GMC Full registration with a license to practice
- MBBS and MRCP or acceptable equivalents
At least two years post graduate training in Medical Oncology in a recognised Cancer Centre/Unit.
General Description
The Christie, first established in 1901, is now the largest single-site cancer centre in Europe, treating more than 40,000 patients a year.
It was the first UK centre to be officially accredited as a comprehensive cancer centre, providing radiotherapy, chemotherapy, highly specialist surgery and a wide range of diagnostic and support services.
Based in Manchester, UK, The Christie serves a population of 3.2 million people. The hospital has 2,500 staff, 400 volunteers and 20,000 public members.
Expertise
The main cancer specialities include, but are not limited to, Clinical and Medical Oncology, Surgical Oncology, Pathology, Radiology, Endocrinology, Palliative Medicine and Psycho-oncology.
The Christie Hospital provides:
- Systemic therapy for all solid organ tumours delivered in the largest chemotherapy unit in the UK on the main site. In addition, 17% of systemic treatments are provided to patients locally via satellite units across the network, and some drugs such as Trastuzumab are delivered at home.
- Radiotherapy, through one of the largest radiotherapy departments in the world, both on the main hospital site in South Manchester and via The Christie radiotherapy centres in Oldham and Salford. In addition, Proton Beam Therapy is now available for the treatment of relevant conditions.
- Highly specialist Surgery for complex and rare cancers.
The Christie is also an international leader in research, with world first breakthroughs for over 100 years. The clinical trials unit is the largest early phase trials unit in the world, with around 200 trials ongoing at any one time. There is also a dedicated education and training unit, The Christie School of Oncology, which provides Medical education opportunities to both undergraduates and healthcare professionals. It is the first of its kind in the UK.
Within the Medical Oncology department, a number of disease groups have an active clinical fellows programme including the breast, colorectal, gastro-oesophageal, gynaecological, hepatobiliary, lung, melanoma, head and neck and renal cancer units, and within the dedicated Experimental Cancer Medicine unit.
