Maria Die Trill, MD, PhD, is the Coordinator of the Psycho-Oncology Unit of the Hospital Universitario Gregorio Marañón and Assistant Professor at the School of Psychology, Universidad Complutense of Madrid, Spain. She obtained her doctoral degree at the Universidad Pontificia Comillas after obtaining a Master of Arts degree at New York University. She was granted a Fulbright scholarship with which she held an appointment as an invited researcher at Bellevue Psychiatric Hospital, New York University Medical Center, and at the Department of Paediatrics of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC) in New York. She then became a Clinical Fellow at MSKCC´s Department of Psychiatry.

Prof Die Trill was appointed Staff Psychologist and Psychiatric Assistant in the Psychology Programme, and Medical Staff Member of the Pediatric Oncology Division at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston.  She also held appointments as Associate Scientific Staff, Assistant in Psychology and Member of the Medical Staff at The Children´s Hospital (Boston). From 1992 until 1996 she was Associate Professor of Psychology in the Department of Psychiatry, School of Medicine, at Harvard Medical School.  After ten years of training and working in the US, she returned to her home country, where she created the first psycho-oncology unit in Spain, which she now coordinates.

Prof Die Trill has been an invited professor and speaker in various European and Latin American countries and has received several awards including the First International Scholar Award in Medical Crisis Counselling from the Linda Pollin Foundation (USA) and the First Noemi Fisman International Award in Clinical Excellence (International Psycho-Oncology Society). Prof Die Trill has served on numerous national and international cancer – related committees. She has organised and served as the 2008 Congress Chair for the IPOS 10th World Congress of Psycho-Oncology held in Madrid. She has designed and coordinates a two year post-graduate masters-level course on Psycho-Oncology and Psychological Aspects of Palliative Care, now in its sixth edition in Madrid. She is the author of two manuals in Spanish: PSICO-ONCOLOGÍA (Psycho-Oncology) and ASPECTOS PSICOLÓGICOS EN CUIDADOS PALIATIVOS (Psychological Aspects in Palliative Care) and has published over 100 book chapters and articles. She is also the author of several videos and other material for training physicians in communication skills.
