Dr. Razvan A. Popescu has trained in Internal Medicine, Medical Oncology and Haematology in Switzerland and the UK following his graduation in 1989, a Doctorate in Medicine from the University of Basel in 1990, and a post doctoral fellowship in Canada. He became a Member of the Royal College of Physicians of London following the MRCP examination in 1996. Dr. Popescu established and is currently Head of Medical Oncology and Co-Chair of the Cancer Centre in the Hirslanden Clinic in Aarau, Switzerland. He has a particular interest in gastro-intestinal, breast and uro-genital cancers, supportive and palliative care and treatment of elderly patients with cancer. He has contributed as author or co-author to clinical trials in Hodgkin’s disease, breast, colorectal, oesophageal, bladder cancer and melanoma, and participated to the first Flims Workshop on Methods in Clinical Cancer Research. He was a co-founder of the Flims Alumni Club (FAC), an interdisciplinary European organisation of young cancer specialists and researchers focused among other goals on clinical trial methodology, served as its first Treasurer and was from 2003-2006 President of FAC.
Dr. Popescu has contributed as Faculty Member to various ESMO activities and for the past 8 years the European School of Oncology (ESO) Masterclass in Clinical Oncology as Deputy Director or Scientific Coordinator. He has helped co-organise symposia within ESMO, ESTRO, EACR and ECCO. His Romanian origin has afforded him close links to and friendships with colleagues in Central and Eastern Europe, and he has participated to a range of educational activities and congresses in this part of Europe. Since 2010 he is the Coordinator of the ESO Eastern European and Balkan Program and Chair of the Eastern European and Balkan Masterclass in Clinical Oncology.
In ESMO he has served a member of the Young Oncologists Committee (2003-2007), Fellowship and Awards Committee (2006-2010), Chair of the ESMO Membership Committee and on the Board of Directors (since 2008). Dr. Razvan Popescu was also the Chair of the National Representatives and Membership Committee (2010-2014) and is an Executive Board Member.
In addition, Dr Popescu was also the ESMO National Representative for Switzerland in 2014.
