The ESMO-MCBS Working Group is essential in maintaining and improving the ESMO-Magnitude of Clinical Benefit Scale, a critical tool in evaluating cancer treatments. As a member, you will contribute to key projects that impact the accessibility and value of cancer therapies worldwide.
We are currently looking to identify ESMO members to join this dynamic Working Group in 2025.

The activities and responsibilities of the ESMO-MCBS WG are as follows:
- Participate actively in meetings
- Provide input to the ESMO-MCBS WG plans and projects
- Participate, if requested, as an author/co-author in the ESMO-MCBS WG activities/projects
- Review educational/scientific material produced by other members of the ESMO-MCBS WG or invited experts based on their particular area of expertise
- Engage in knowledge-sharing within the oncology community
- Represent the ESMO-MCBS WG interests at ESMO or external meetings (subject to invitation and approval)
Members work on a volunteer basis; the commitment is typically no more than 72 hours per year. The appointment will be for a mandate of two years (from 1 January 2025 until 31 December 2026) and may be extended.
Appointment requirements
Applicants should:
- Be an ESMO member (in good standing)
- Be a medical doctor (oncologist or haematologist). We are particularly looking for haemato-oncologists
- Have a particular interest in access to cancer medicines, clinical trials, and have a basic understanding of how the ESMO-MCBS works
- Have good communication skills in English
The candidate must not
Currently hold a position in a for-profit healthcare organisation (excluding healthcare professionals in hospitals), pharmaceutical, diagnostic, biotechnology, medical technology and research, commercial medical education company or organisation, whether paid or not (except as a member of a scientific board or advisory board).
Personal attributes
The candidate should be able to demonstrate that they:
- Are committed to the strategic goals, values and vision of ESMO
- Make an active contribution to ESMO’s mission
- Show unquestionable commitment to the highest level of professional and personal ethics
- Are willing and able (in terms of time and knowledge) to accept the workload and responsibilities inherent to this position; and create a positive atmosphere for constructive teamwork
Commitments
The candidate, as a condition of appointment, acknowledges that they:
- Will, if selected, resign/withdraw at the latest by the start of the term of office from any employment or leadership position as an officer or in a body of any international medical professional society, research group, foundation or charity, whether paid or not, if this position adversely affects ESMO’s interests according to the Executive Board’s evaluation
