Vacancy – Editor-in-Chief ESMO Open

In 2015 ESMO launched ESMO Open, a new online-only, open access journal to complement its existing publishing programme.

The journal, now well established, publishes original research articles, reviews, correspondence and guidelines covering all aspects of cancer research and care.

At the end of 2024 the current Editor-in-Chief of ESMO Open, Professor Giuseppe Curigliano, will step down from this role, to assume the position of ESMO President-Elect.  Consequently, ESMO is now seeking a new Editor-in-Chief to guide the Journal through the next phase of its development. The Editor-in-Chief will be expected to manage the peer review process for submitted manuscripts, appoint and lead an editorial team, working directly with ESMO and other partner societies, and determine the editorial policies of the journal in partnership with ESMO and the journal’s publisher.

Applicants may be based anywhere in the world. Specialists working in any area of oncology or cancer research are welcome to apply. Applicants should have an MD and PhD (or similar degree), be an ESMO member, and should be able to demonstrate their impact in the field. The ideal candidate will have a proven commitment to education and academic excellence.

Editorial support will be provided, as well as an annual honorarium. The term of office will be 5 years in the first instance. The editor will be expected to spend approximately 12 hours per week working on the journal, plus participate in occasional meetings. A more complete job description is available on request.

Applications including a CV of maximum 3 pages including details of any positions held with other journals, publication metrics (including h-index and number of citations) and appendix with details of 10 most important publications, short biography (not more than 600 words) and motivation letter of maximum 5 pages outlining your editorial policy and vision for the journal, should be sent to the attention of Prof. Andrés Cervantes at executivesecretariat@esmo.org by 30 September 2024.
