Wieneke Buikhuisen, MD, studied Medicine in the Netherlands and earned her Medical Degree from the University of Amsterdam in 1994. She specialised in Internal Medicine at the Academic Medical Centre in Amsterdam and was certified in 2001. She continued specialisation in pulmonology at the Onze Lieve Vrouwe Gasthuis Hospital in Amsterdam and received this degree in 2004.
From 1996 to 2001 Resident Internal Medicine at the Academic Medical Centre, Onze Lieve Vrouwe Gasthuis (OLVG Hospital), Amsterdam and at the same hospital, from 2001 to 2004 she was resident Pulmonology at the Free University Medical Centre.
Since 2005 Dr Buikhuisen works as a consultant at the department of Thoracic Oncology of the Netherlands Cancer Institute, Amsterdam. She has special interest in the technique of endobronchial and endo oesophageal ultrasounds. The Netherlands Cancer Institute has achieved the certificate ENETS centre of excellence and as a pulmonologist Dr Buikhuisen is part of the neuroendocrine tumour team.
Working at a reference centre for malignant mesothelioma, Dr Buikhuisen’s research focuses on angiogenesis in mesothelioma. She has extensive experience in phase I, II, III trials.
She is member of ESMO (European Society for Medical Oncology), member of the Dutch Mesothelioma Working Party and is co-author of the Dutch Mesothelioma guidelines (The Dutch Thoracic Society). Dr Buikhuisen has published several articles in peer-reviewed journals.
