Rodrigo Sánchez-Bayona is a Spanish medical oncologist with expertise in breast and gynecological cancers. He currently serves at the Breast & Gynecological Cancer Unit of Hospital Universitario 12 de Octubre in Madrid, Spain. In addition to his clinical role, he is a medical advisor at SOLTI Cancer Research Group and coordinator of SOLTI Young. He is the Scientific Secretary of the Spanish Society of Medical Oncology. Dr. Sánchez-Bayona has been a member of the ESMO Young Oncologists Committee and Committee Chair since January 2025.
Dr. Sánchez-Bayona completed his medical degree at Universidad de Navarra, where he also pursued a Biomedical Research Diploma at the Center of Applied Medical Research. Following his medical studies, he undertook a residency in Medical Oncology at Clínica Universidad de Navarra, complemented by the Cancer Prevention and Survivorship Program at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas. In 2020, he completed his PhD focused on breast cancer Epidemiology (Cum Laude).
His research primarily focuses on precision Oncology, particularly liquid biopsy in breast cancer, and Pharmacogenomics. He is the Principal Investigator of the PROCURE project, focused on pharmacogenomic variants and the risk of toxicity in patients treated with antibody-drug conjugates. As a principal and sub-investigator in numerous clinical trials, he contributes to improving therapeutic approaches in breast cancer. His work has led to the publication of more than 50 peer-reviewed articles in indexed journals.
Dr. Sánchez-Bayona is committed to education and mentoring. He has taught oncology at Universidad de Navarra and Universidad Complutense de Madrid and is a professor of Biostatistics and Epidemiology. Recognized for his contributions, Dr. Sánchez-Bayona has received several awards, including the Spanish Young Oncologist Award (SEOM Somos Futuro 2021) and the Fundación HNA Research Grant (2022). These accolades highlight his leadership in oncology and commitment to advancing the field. He regularly presents his work at international conferences and serves as a reviewer for esteemed journals, including ESMO Open, and is a co-author of the Plain Language Summaries for Annals of Oncology.
