Dr Sanfilippo is a medical oncologist dedicated to the treatment of adult patients with sarcoma in the Oncology Unit, Adult Mesenchymal Tumours, directed by Prof Paolo Casali at Istituto Nazionale Tumori, Milan, Italy, where she completed her residency training in 2007. She earned her medical degree from the University of Palermo, Italy, in 2003.
Dr Sanfilippo is involved in all the institutional research activities on soft tissue and bone sarcoma and GIST, which include the development of new preclinical models of sarcomas, identification of new targets and new anticancer treatments for specific sarcoma subtypes, studies on the immune-profile of sarcomas, as well as on mechanisms of resistance to therapy, clinical studies on neoadjuvant therapies in extremities and retroperitoneal soft tissue sarcoma, and on metastatic bone and soft tissue sarcomas. Dr Sanfilippo is particularly dedicated to the study and treatment of liposarcoma, leiomyosarcoma subtypes and uterine sarcoma. She is the leader of the Gynaecological Working Group of the international leiomyosarcoma round-table (an international research group dedicated to leiomyosarcomas). She is also the Principal Investigator of Italian and International trials on sarcoma and uterine sarcoma and coordinator of the Italian Network on Rare Tumours. She collaborates with several sarcoma patients advocacy groups, among which in particular the Leiomyosarcoma Foundation. Since 2020, she has been research support to the Italian Association for Cancer Research (AIRC).
She has been in the editorial board of the journal Anticancer Drug since 2016 and she has published extensively as author and co-author in peer-reviewed publications.
Dr Sanfilippo is member of ESMO, member of the Editorial Board of Anticancer drug and since 2019, Scientific coordinator of the Gynecological Leyomiosarcoma round table.
