Nicola Giesen (née Lehners) studied medicine at the Universities of Tübingen (Germany), Porto Alegre (Brazil), Leicester and Warwick (UK) and received her MD from the University of Tübingen in 2010. In 2018, she completed her specialist training in haematology and medical oncology at the University Hospital Heidelberg (Germany) where she currently continues working as a senior physician in the department of haematology, oncology and rheumatology.  

For her post-graduate studies she joined the research group on experimental therapies for haematologic malignancies at the German Cancer Research Centre in 2013. In 2015, she received fellowships by the National Centre for Tumour Diseases Heidelberg School of Oncology and the German Cancer Consortium School of Oncology. In 2017, she received a fellowship by the Olympia Morata Programme of the University of Heidelberg. 

Her main research interests are the molecular charactersiation of high-risk multiple myeloma and the development of personalised therapies in refractory multiple myeloma, as well as management of infectious complications in immunocompromised cancer patients. She is a member of the infectious diseases working party (AGIHO) of the German Society of Haematology and Medical Oncology (DGHO).
