Luís Castelo-Branco (MD, PharmD, Phd) is a Medical Oncologist and was ESMO Scientific and Medical Division Fellow (2021-2023).

Dr Castel-Branco obtained a Pharmaceutical Degree (Bachelor & Master’s) from the University of Coimbra (2002-2008), a Medical Degree from the University of Algarve (2009-2013), specialization in Medical Oncology from Algarve Medical and University Centre, Faro (2015-2021) and a PhD in Public Health from the University Nova, Lisbon (2017-2023), with the title: “Addressing new challenges in Oncology: Lessons learned from the boom of novel immunotherapy and the COVID-19 pandemic”.

Dr Castelo-Branco was co-founder of the ESMO-CoCARE initiative – International registry assessing the effects of COVID-19 in patients with Cancer and he is an ESMO Leaders Generation Programme alumni (2020-2022).

During his training Dr Castelo-Branco had various international experiences: he obtained a fellowship from ESMO in 2018 for a Clinical Unit Visit at Institut Jules Bordet, Brussels under Professor Ahmad Awada’s supervision. He was trained in Tulane Cancer Center, New Orleans, USA in genitourinary tumours (2 months, 2019) and Canterbury Oncology department and Integrated Palliative Care Service, Christchurch, New Zealand (5 months, 2019-2020). As a medical student he was visitor at “Quality uses of medicine and Pharmacy Research Center, University of South Australia” and Flinders Medical School, Adelaide, Australia.

Dr Castelo-Branco’s post-doc research interests are in cancer public health, policy and real-world evidence collaborative research. He also has a particular interests in associative initiatives. He was founder and President of the Algarve Medical Students Association (2009-2010) and Council President of the Portuguese Youth Pharmacists Association (2008-2011). He was selected as deputy member for the Portuguese Health Parliament in 2016-2017.
