Lonneke van de Poll-Franse is Professor of Cancer Epidemiology and Survivorship at Tilburg University, Group Leader at the Netherlands Cancer Institute and Senior Researcher at the Comprehensive Cancer Organisation Netherlands.
She obtained her Master in Biomedical Health Sciences- Epidemiology from Radboud University, Nijmegen, the Netherlands in 1995. Trained as an epidemiologist, Lonneke van de Poll-Franse has developed experience in the conduct, management and analyses of large population-based studies and trials. Her research focuses on cancer survivorship: the short- and long term physical and psychosocial consequences of cancer and its treatment.
In 2009 she started the PROFILES (Patient Reported Outcomes Following Initial treatment and Long-term Evaluation of Survivorship) registry that combines population-based cancer registry data with patient reported outcomes (www.profilesregistry.nl). PROFILES registry has collected PRO data from over 20.000 cancer patients and survivors that is shared with the academic community for free.
More recently her research has shifted from mainly longitudinal observational studies to intervention trials. Prof van de Poll-Franse is PI of two pragmatic cluster randomised trials and two individually randomised trials. All four trials investigate the hypothesised improvement of information provision, shared decision making, and survivorship care in patients with gynaecological cancer, prostate cancer or lymphoma.
Prof van de Poll-Franse obtained her PhD in diabetes research from VU University, Amsterdam, The Netherlands in 2001, and has a special interest in the role of comorbidity in cancer survivorship and the mechanisms underlying the interaction between diseases, treatments and outcomes. She collects biomaterials from PROFILES participants to further investigate why some cancer patients survive in relatively good health, while others develop numerous health problems after cancer and its treatment.
Prof van de Poll-Franse was Chair of the EORTC-Quality of Life group from 2014 to 2017.
Since 2013 she is Member of the Signalling Committee of the Dutch Cancer Society, and Review panel member of the selection committee Fellowships Dutch Cancer Society.
Since 2012 Member of the Steering Committee of the international ‘Diabetes and Cancer Study Group’ and since 2011 Member of the Scientific Council for Socio-Oncological Research of the Dutch Cancer Society (Selection of project grants).
