Professor José Martin-Moreno earned his medical degree (MD) and doctorate (PhD) from the University of Granada, Spain, and additional public health credentials (MPH, DrPH) from Harvard University, USA. His primary medical expertise lies in Preventive Medicine and Public Health, with a strong focus on Epidemiology, Cancer and Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs), Public Health Services, and Health Policy & Management. He is currently a Full Professor of Medicine and Public Health at the University of Valencia, Spain, and serves as the Director of the Andrija Stampar European Summer School of Public Health. He has also recently been appointed to lead the Chair for Innovative Health Management within the Economy and Health Foundation, an initiative focused on promoting innovative benchmarking and advancing strategic management and excellence in healthcare services. 

Dr. Martin-Moreno has held numerous prestigious roles throughout his career. He previously served as Director of Programme Management at WHO Europe and as Director-General & Chief Medical Officer of Spain. He has been an advisor to high-level European institutions, including the European Commission (Directorate-General for Health and Consumers and Directorate-General for Research), the Scientific and Technical Office of the European Parliament, the European Institute of Oncology, and the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC). He is a Past President of the Association of Schools of Public Health in the European Region (ASPHER), and served as Senior Associate at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, USA, for 18 years, where he held joint part-time appointments in the Department of Health Policy and Management and the Department of Epidemiology.

As a prolific scientist, Dr. Martin-Moreno has authored more than 400 scientific articles in national and international journals, including high-impact publications such as The New England Journal of Medicine, The Lancet, British Medical Journal, Annals of Oncology, and the European Journal of Cancer.

Dr. Martin-Moreno currently serves as a Cancer Policy Adviser for The European Observatory on Health Systems and Policies. He is also a Member of the European Academy of Cancer Sciences, a Core Faculty Member of the European School of Oncology, and a Member of the ESMO Public Policy Committee. Additionally, he contributes as a member of the Scientific Committee of the European Code Against Cancer and holds positions on the Board of the Spanish League Against Cancer and Spain’s Royal Academy of Medicine.

Dr. Martin-Moreno’s contributions have been widely recognized through numerous awards, including the Harvard Alumni Award of Merit from the Harvard School of Public Health, the Andrija Stampar Award and Medal for lifelong distinguished contributions to Public Health (awarded at the European Public Health Conference). He is also an Honorary Fellow of the UK Faculty of Public Health (FFPH), Royal College of Physicians.
Professor Martin-Moreno’s career has been dedicated to contributing to the advancement of Public Health, Epidemiology, and Cancer Prevention & Control, with ongoing efforts to support progress at both European and global levels.
