Giuseppe Lo Russo

Istituto Nazionale dei Tumori, Milan

Italy

Giuseppe Lo Russo is a Medical Oncologist working at the Istituto Nazionale dei Tumori (INT) in Milan, Italy. Since the beginning of his career his main focus has been the management of patients and research in the thoracic cancer field. His publication record comprises 110 scientific publications in international journals, of which 36 as First/Co-First or Last/Co-Last or corresponding author, with an Official Index of 27 (Scopus, March 2023). He has been principal-investigator in multiple clinical trials (about 40 phase II or phase III trials).

After completing his PhD (2014-2018) he wanted to focus his education beyond clinical activities, with the aim to include learning about new laboratory techniques and translational work. For this reason he spent some time at the Department of Cancer Biology and Genetics of the Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center in Columbus, Ohio, USA as an exchange visitor. During his time there he contributed to many projects concerning cancer biology and he still continues to collaborate with the American group.

His most important research project, on which he has been working for the last 5 years, concerns the study of hyperprogressive disease mechanisms in patients with NSCLC treated with IO [Lo Russo; CCR 2019]. He thinks that the scientific discussion, the sharing of data, technical issues, skills and ideas lead to the highest productivity and may promote a synergic effect. Thus he is extremely collaborative and has both Italian and international collaborators. Furthermore the successful results he has obtained, his research experience, the high level of independence achieved in these years in terms of coordinating, planning and executing his projects, as well as in training and supervising others, have prepared him to create his independent research group.
