Dr Giannis Mountzios was born in Larissa, Greece. He obtained his medical degree (MD) from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in 1998 with a scholarship from the Greek Ministry of Education and graduated from the Hellenic Military Medical Academy the same year. He completed his residency in Internal Medicine at the Airforce General Hospital of Athens and in Medical Oncology at the University of Athens School of Medicine, “Alexandra” University Hospital (Pr. M.A. Dimopoulos).

He then obtained a master’s degree (MSc) in Translational and Clinical Research in Oncology from the Institut Gustave Roussy and the University Paris XI (Paris-Saclay), France in 2007 (Pr. Jean-Charles Soria) and became board-certified in Medical Oncology in 2009.

In 2010 he obtained his PhD in Thoracic Oncology from the University of Athens School of Medicine.

Dr Mountzios has received fellowships from the American Society of Clinical Oncology (Young Investigator award), the European Society for Medical Oncology (Clinical and Translational Research in Thoracic Oncology) and the Hellenic Society for Medical Oncology (HESMO).

He is currently working as the Director of the 4th Oncology Department and Clinical Trials Unit at the Henry Dunant Hospital Center in Athens. He serves as Principal Investigator on more than 40 interventional clinical trials in lung cancer. He is a member of the ESMO Faculty (non-metastatic NSCLC) and member of the European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) Lung Cancer Group. He has served as Chair of the HESMO Young Medical Oncologists Committee, member of the Board of Directors of HESMO, Co-chair of the ESMO/SIOPE Adolescents and Young Adults Working Group of ESMO and member of the ESMO Young Oncologists Committee.

He currently serves as member of the ESMO Publishing Working Group and has co-edited the Handbook of Oncological Emergencies, the Handbook of Cancer in Adolescent and the Handbook of Supportive and Palliative Care. He is currently working as a co-editor on Thoracic Tumours: Essentials for Clinicians. He has served as the Director of the Hellenic Oncology Academy and is currently the Scientific Co-ordinator of the Lung Cancer Working Group of the Hellenic Co-operative Oncology Group (HeCOG).

His main research interests include molecular biology and immunotherapy of lung cancer, with a focus on the discovery of biomarkers and a special interest in young patients with lung cancer.  He has published more than 150 articles in peer-reviewed journals including The New England Journal of Medicine, The Lancet, Nature Reviews Clinical Oncology, Journal of Clinical Oncology, Journal of Thoracic Oncology, Annals of Oncology and Clinical Cancer Research.
