Erika Ruiz-Garcia

Erika Ruiz-Garcia trained in oncology at the Hospital de Oncologia SXXI in Mexico City and then specialised in gastrointestinal oncology. She completed a fellowship in Translational Research at the Institut Gustave Roussy (France) and was also a clinical observer in Gastro-Intestinal Services Unit in the Department of Medicine at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center (USA). Currently, she works as Professor in the Department of Gastrointestinal Medical Oncology and Chief of the Translational Medicine Laboratory at the Instituto Nacional de Cancerologia in Mexico City. Over the last 10 years, she has been involved in national and international clinical and translational research projects, some of them under her leadership in gastrointestinal cancer. She has published 59 peer-reviewed articles in prestigious journals including, Journal of Clinical Oncology, European Journal of Cancer, British Journal of Cancer and Scientific Reports, with a h–index on PubMed of 17,851 citations. In addition, she co-edited the textbook Translational Research and Onco-Omics Applications in the Era of Cancer Personal Genomics (Springer Nature 2019) and has been invited to serve as the Associated Editor of Frontiers Oncology in Molecular and Cellular Oncology.
She is a member of the National System of Researchers of the National Council of Science and Technology (CONACyT) in Mexico. Within ESMO, she currently serves as a member of the Gastro-Intestinal Tumors Faculty (2018-2022) and the Membership Committee (2021-2022). She is also part of the 2020-2021 Scientific Committee of ESMO World Congress on Gastrointestinal Cancer. She has worked as Guideline Panel Member for Adjuvant Therapy for Stage II and III Colon Cancer Guideline Expert as well as for the Resource-Stratified Treatment of Invasive Colorectal Cancer Guideline Expert Panel for the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO). In 2016, she won the Science and Technology Award in Food given by CONACyT and Coca-Cola with “Methylation Landscape of Human Breast Cancer Cells in Response to Dietary Compound Resveratrol” and in 2019, she received the Oncology National Award given by Sociedad Mexicana de Oncología, for “Antiproliferative effects of the cannabinoid endogenous agonists on gastric cancer cells lines”.
Nowadays, she is participating in an EU granted project, the LEGACy Project, where Prof. Andrés Cervantes is the Principal Investigator. The research includes EU and Latin American countries to foster international cooperation and technology transfer in molecular studies for gastric cancer.
