Types of Fellowships: Translational and Clinical

The ESMO Leadership Development Committee carefully selects fellowship types based on submitted projects, offering a one-year project with the possibility of extension for a second year upon committee approval.

Translational Fellowship

Embark on a comprehensive bench-to-bedside journey with renowned European centers of excellence. This fellowship provides young oncologists with the latest developments in translational cancer research, fostering international collaboration and career development.

Objectives:

  • Training in translational research in European centers with international acclaim.
  • Collaboration with European institutions of excellence.
  • Support to develop high-quality translational research projects in oncology.

Clinical Fellowship

Gain valuable training in clinical research in esteemed European cancer centers. This fellowship supports the expansion of professional networks through collaboration with institutions of excellence, providing the necessary support to develop clinical research projects.

Objectives:

  • Training in clinical research in renowned European cancer centers.
  • Expanding professional networks through collaboration with institutions of excellence.
  • Support for the development of clinical oncology research projects.

Amount and duration   

  • Fellows receive €50,000 for a one-year project.
  • Host institutes receive €1,000 for administration costs.
  • Second-year prolongation available upon request and Leadership Development Committee approval. Download the request form

Application requirements

Please read the full Guidelines and Application Instructions for Research Fellowships before starting your application.

  • Applicants must be ESMO members aged 40 or under at the time of application.
  • They should be fully qualified oncologists (or in advanced phase of training) engaged in cancer research or clinical oncology practice.
  • Be proficient in English and/or in the community language of the host institute.

Application must include

  • Completed online application form
  • CV (3 pages max). Clearly indicate your current position. (template supplied)
  • List of publications and presentations :
    • Pease include no more than 5 publications and include a short statement (no more than 2 sentences) explaining why you have selected these and the impact they have had on your work.
    • Publications should be full publications - not abstracts or communications.
    • Presentations should be limited to the last five years.
  • Research proposal with strategy, aims, and timelines (templates supplied).
  • Motivation letter, including project goals and implementation in your own institute/country (max 2 pages).
  • Acceptance letter on host institute headed paper, signed by the responsible project manager (1 page max).
  • Recommendation letter from the home institute headed paper, signed by the applicant’s department head (1 page max).
  • All documents should be labeled with the applicant's last name. All documents should be written using the font Arial Narrow size 11 or plus.

Application review process

The ESMO Leadership Development Committee evaluates applications based on overall quality, research project feasibility, and the applicant's background. The committee selects the fellowship type (translational or clinical) for successful applicants.

IMPORTANT:

  • All applications must be submitted in English.
  • Incomplete applications, those not using the CV and project proposal templates, and applications that exceed the word/ page limits or do not follow the instructions indicated will not be accepted.
