History
The Christie is one of Europe’s leading cancer centres, treating over 40,000 patients a year. We have a history of over 100 years of leading cancer care.
We are based in Manchester and serve a population of 3.2 million across Greater Manchester & Cheshire, but as a national specialist around a quarter of our patients are referred to us from other parts of the country.

We have:
- 2,700 staff in excess of 130 Consultants
- An annual turnover last year of £223 million;
- The largest radiotherapy department in the world on our main site in south Manchester, plus radiotherapy centres in Oldham and Salford;
- Chemotherapy on site, at 10 other sites, and in a mobile unit which enables us to treat patients closer to home;
- A £12 million integrated unit for haemato-oncology and transplants together with teenage and young adult cancer facilities;
- A specialist endocrine unit;
- A patient treatment centre which is home to the largest early phase clinical trials unit in the world, the largest chemotherapy facility in the UK and a private patients’ suite to increase income for our NHS services;
- A very large hospital charity with over 28,000 supporters and 2,000 fundraisers to help bring in over £14 million a year which helps fund our research and additional patient services;
- A £14 million joint venture with HCA International limited to develop private patient services and increase income for our NHS developments.

- Ranked as the best in the UK for cancer research in Manchester, most of which is undertake on the Christie site;
- Part of the Manchester Cancer Research Centre in partnership with The University of Manchester and Cancer Research UK;
- One of seven partners in the Manchester Academic Health Science Centre, which was established to underpin the development of Greater Manchester as a world leader in health research working closely with the neurosurgical centre at SRFT for our neuro-oncology patients;
- Co-ordinating the Greater Manchester Spinal Cord Compression pathway.
Our Ambitions
We intend to be a world leader in cancer care. We are proud of our 100-year history and our excellent reputation - and it is something we want to build on. We are doing this through our 20:20 Vision which incorporates the views of our patients, members, staff and key stakeholders.
Palliative and Supportive Care
The Christie Supportive Care Team supports patients from diagnosis through to recovery, as well as providing care during the last days and weeks of life. We have a special interest in early intervention including prevention and management of the adverse effects of cancer and cancer treatment.
The team has built excellent relationships with oncologists; we work closely with them undertaking joint clinics and ward rounds across different disease groups (e.g. ovarian, colorectal, Hepato-biliary cancers). This includes a joint clinic between the supportive care team and the Experimental Cancer Medicine Treatment unit at The Christie. The pain service is also integrated within supportive care and we work jointly as one team.
We are a pioneering and award-winning team, having developed Enhanced Supportive Care (ESC), a cancer centre initiative which aims to provide patients with better access to expertise in supportive care across the spectrum of cancer. ESC is currently being rolled out in several cancer centres across England.
Inpatient Care
The majority of Christie inpatients are admitted for planned interventions or with problems associated with cancer or cancer treatment. Around 250 patients die in The Christie each year. The team also provide palliative care for hospital in patients with complex needs during the last weeks and days of life, and work closely with colleagues in local hospices and the community.
There are no inpatient beds designated for palliative or supportive care; the team supports all wards and departments on a consultation basis. This includes the Oncology Assessment Unit, Critical Care and the integrated Haematology / Teenage and Young Adult unit.
We undertake a weekly MDT with our extended team.
Outpatient / Ambulatory Care / Virtual Wards
We have a significant supportive care outpatient service, with daily clinics (remote and face to face).
There is a broad patient mix - including those currently undergoing cancer treatments with supportive and palliative care needs, complex survivorship problems and patients no longer receiving treatment who have advancing disease.
We work closely with acute oncology, and are in the process of extending our work in the outpatient population within a new ambulatory unit, and through virtual wards.
