History

The Isala hospital, located in Zwolle and Meppel in The Netherlands, is one of the largest non-academic hospitals in our country. It offers basic care and highly specialised care (cardiothoracic- and neurosurgery, dialysis, autologues stem cell transplantation and radiotherapy) for inhabitants in the north and east region of our country. Within Isala there is a specialised academy that coordinates all teaching activities. Research and innovation are considered very important.

The building in which the Isala hospital is situated is a green environment to increase the wellbeing of our patients.

Profile

Within the Isala hospital there is an Oncology Centre Isala, founded in 2009. All patients with a new diagnosis of cancer are discussed in multidisciplinary teams consisting of an expert team of caregivers. These tumour-specific working groups make treatment plans for all oncology patients in daily or weekly multidisciplinary oncology meetings. Furthermore, in Isala there is a high level of research within every department.

The oncology ward consists of approx. 30 beds. There is a high care haematologic unit for treatment of intensive haematologic illnesses.

The department of radiation oncology is situated nearby the hospital in Zwolle.

Specialities

The department of medical oncology treats all common solid tumours and has a special license for the treatment of melanoma and renal cell carcinoma. Besides this, treatment of PARP inhibitors is given.

Isala has a JACIE-accreditation for autologous stem cell transplantation and, in cooperation with VUmc Amsterdam, cares for patients after allogeneic stem cell transplantation. The high-care palliative unit of nursing home IJsselheem is located in the new hospital building.

Palliative and Supportive Care

Isala-Zwolle-Staff

In the treatment pathways of all tumour groups there is specific focus on palliative care.

When a patient enters the palliative phase, the patient can be brought to the attention of the multidisciplinary consultation team for cancer pain and palliative care (PACTeam). This team is comprised of 3 oncologists, 3 internists, some radiation oncologist, anaesthesiologists, a chaplain, a palliative care physician and 5 palliative care nurse practitioners. We give advice based on a model in which four domains of palliative care are provided; somatic, physiological, social and existential. Our work includes the in- and outpatient clinic.

All members of the palliative care team are responsible for the development of guidelines with regard to symptom management and for the teaching of other professionals. In our team we adhere to the common Dutch guidelines.

The Palliative Care Center Isala participates in a multidisciplinary regional consultation team for palliative care. In this regional consultation team general practitioners, specialised nurses working in home care, a nursing home physician, and a general pharmacist work together with professionals who are working in the hospital. There is a special focus is on improving the cooperation with GP’s.

The palliative care team Isala is an ambitious team. We participate in the development of good advanced care planning (ACP) given to every caregiver in our hospital.
