The Oncology Department of Campus Bio-Medico is a complex operative unit committed in cancer diagnosis and care, supportive and palliative care.
It includes a simple operative unit of Day Hospital, consulting rooms and hospital wards (with about 25 beds) where anticancer treatments take place, therapy toxicities are treated by supportive care and where simultaneous and palliative care take place. The Palliative Care Unit is an integral part of the Department and consists of a “Day Hospice” available from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and hospital wards where patients are managed that require intensive medical therapy.
Palliative and supportive care
The transition from curative care (hospital) to palliative care (hospice) which represent one of the most confusing and traumatic transitions that patients can experience, is based on an agreement between the oncology service and a palliative care association.
Before the transition, the two teams (oncologists, palliativists) meet each other to discuss about wishes, needs, and preferences of patients and family to ensure a continuity of care.
